Labdanum

Labdanum is a warm, rich resin with a long and storied history in perfumery, harvested from the rockrose shrubs of the Mediterranean. This dark, sticky resin produces an aroma that is deeply balsamic, slightly sweet, leathery, and with a subtle amber-like warmth.

In ancient times, labdanum was collected from the beards of goats that grazed among the rockrose bushes, making it one of the earliest animal-adjacent perfumery materials. In modern perfumery, labdanum is prized as one of the finest base notes available.

It provides a warm, rounded sweetness with leathery and honeyed facets that add incredible depth and longevity to compositions. Labdanum is a key component of the classic amber accord and plays an essential role in many chypre and oriental fragrances.

It pairs beautifully with bergamot and oakmoss in classic chypre structures, with vanilla for warm comfort, with oud for rich Middle Eastern compositions, and with cistus for a complete Mediterranean character.
